Migration

Migration is the process of an animal moving to another location in search of food/water/warmth or other environmental resources

It is important as it allows animals to survive phenomena (such as winter or drought) by running away from them

Usually the driving source is the seasonal movement of the sun's energy (as it drives temperature and therefore weather), weather for wildebeest looking for rain-nourished grass or birds moving to the warmer tropics to feed over the winter

Migration is the movement for what possible reason:

warmth
water
all answers are correct
food

Migrations do not have to be over huge distances (although they are long relative to the size of the animal). Hummingbirds only travel a few hundred kilometres across the Gulf of Mexico, but burn up most of their bodyweight in the process.

Other migrations such as monarch butterflies last multiple generations (butterflies take 4) and their mechanism of navigation is still contested by scientists (we do not know where monarchs go in the winter in New Zealand)

Why do whales migrate to the tropics?:
food
to raise their young in the warmer water
human hunting activities
they are curious
