Reproduction

Finally we have arrived at the fundamental output of plant and animal behaviour, the concept of reproduction. This feeds back to natural selection, the "aim" of any organism to reproduce and therefore pass on its DNA to the next generation.

The mechanism runs as follows :

  • The animal saves energy by reducing competition or optimising it's behaviour.
  • This means that it is better able to reproduce
  • Hence the animal's alleles make up a greater proportion of the population (through inheritance)
  • Therefore the next generation saves more energy and reproduces more
  • Hence the cycle continues to propagate and the species becomes better and better able to survive and compete, fulfilling the biological purpose of life.

Which principle describes the process of an animal becoming increasingly well adapted for its environment?

    plant and animal behaviour
    natural selection
    survival
    adaption
