Territory

A territory is an area of land that is controlled by a particular individual of group for their exclusive use.

This means that an animal will fight to get a territory and then spend a significant amount of time and energy looking after it. Although this might seem like a waste of energy, like a hierarchy it is less than what would be expended by fighting with others every time a resource came up.

Hierarchy also moderates resources by ensuring that they are always available to the strongest group, which reproduces for the good of the group, rather than being spread over many inferior groups that may not survive.

The main adaptive advantage of territory is:

interspecific competition reduction
happiness
saving energy
