What is tropism

A tropism is a growth response towards/away from a stimulus

As animals move around a lot, they do not display tropism. Instead they display other movement responses like kinesis

There are many different types of tropism including:

  • Gravitropsim (gravity)
  • Thigmotropism (touch)
  • Hydrotropism (water)
  • Chemotropism (chemicals)
  • Any stimulus that causes a plant to grow in a particular direction (there are lots)

  • Tropisms can be towards (positive) or away from (negative) a stimulus


    Tropisms however do not include

  • Temporary movements (these are nastic responses)
  • Random movements (tropisms must have a direction and stimulus)
  • Any change not directly attributable to growth

  • A plant grows based on tropisms, it does not consciously "choose" where to grow (as it has no brain or nervous system).

    An animal growing is a result of:
    copying others
    tropism
    other mechanisms
    kinesis

    A pumpkin grows it's tendrils around a tree. This is a result of:
    thigmotropism
    luck
    chemotaxis
    hydrotaxis

    A a radiata pine grows verticaly up. This is a result of:
    gravitropism
    hydrotaxis
    chemotaxis
    thigmotropism

    A a root of a tree grows underground. This is a result of:
    gravitropism
    all options are correct
    thigmotropism
    hydrotaxis

    A germinating pea grows towards a hole in a box this is:
    negative phototropism
    positive hydrotaxis
    postive phototropism
    negative hydrotaxis
